English TutoringThe competitive nature of a classroom environment can increase levels of stress hormones which can affect memory, concentration and learning capacity: By opting for In Home Tutors’ coaching services, you are already eliminating these negative effects.

To make sure that your child receives maximum benefit from his/her In Home Tutor you should aim to provide a comfortable learning environment, free from pressure and distractions.

  • Where – It could be a corner of their bedroom or in the family room but make sure that the study area is separate from distractions like games and TV. Children are habitual users of iPods and smart phones so make sure that these are out of reach.
  • Furniture – A desk or table that is large enough to hold everything that could be needed during a session. Preferably, the table should have a non-glare finish and be at a height where your child can sit comfortably with their elbows on the table.A chair for the tutor and a chair for your child. Your child’s seat should be simple, not one that rotates and be at a height where they can put their feet flat on the ground.
  • Equipment – Your In Home Tutor will provide texts and worksheets as required. You should ensure that your child has a supply of pencils, pens, sharpener, ruler etc.
  • Lighting – Adequate lighting is important to avoid eye-strain, headaches and fatigue. If the room lighting is too dim, a desk lamp that covers a large area may be the solution. Make sure that the height of the shade prevents the light from glaring directly into your child’s eyes.
  • Temperature – If the study area is too warm, your child may become sleepy and find it hard to concentrate. If it is too cold their thinking may become slow. Be sensible about heating and /or ventilation.
  • Food – Providing your child with a drink and /or snack before the session will aid concentration. This should be a healthy snack rather than a “sugar-fix”.A bottle of water should always be available.
  • Music – As a general rule, a quieter environment is better. However, some children do find it easier to concentrate with a low level of background sound. Music, such as that of Bach and Beethoven, has been found to enhance mental processes and aid retention of material. This is something you should discuss with your In Home Tutor before implementing.

Providing a good study environment will ensure that your child’s tutoring sessions are as productive as possible and that maximum progress is made.
