The Importance of Spelling and Grammar

- Monday, December 02, 2013

Let's eat, Grandma. There is much argument these days about the importance of correct spelling and grammar. Some people say that language is a living thing and constantly evolving, and therefore rules about punctuation, spelling and grammar are not relevant.

Others claim that communication via email and text have made precise English outmoded. Whatever the views on what is acceptable on Facebook or in an SMS, most people still judge writers on their use of correct English.

A tutor or examiner will not give marks if they cannot understand a student’s work and will often take off marks for poor spelling: similarly, an employer will not be impressed with a poorly written letter of application.

How a student writes reflects on them. Those who write poorly are sending the message that either they don’t possess the necessary skills, or that they don’t care. Either of these is not desirable. Using correct punctuation, grammar and spelling will ensure that the meaning is crystal clear and reflect favourably on the student.

Checking Work

  • Many students rely on a computer to check their spelling and grammar. Programmes such as Microsoft Word, will underline spelling and grammar mistakes and offer suggestions on the correct format. Such programmes however, are not infallible, and should not be relied on to find all errors. They will often miss common mistakes such as when “your” is used instead of “you’re” or when “to” is used instead of “too”. There is no replacement for proof-reading work and knowing how to use a dictionary.
  • Students often forget this necessity to review their work and fail to allow time for it. This is something which should be taken into account when planning assignments and homework.
  • It is a good idea to leave some time between writing and reviewing; that way students are more likely to pick up their mistakes.
  • Reading the work out loud can help detect grammar errors.
  • When checking spelling, look over a previously marked piece of work and make a list of the common errors. Use this list to check the current piece of work. This way repeated errors can be avoided. Repeating an error will only further embed it in the memory and make it harder to recall the correct spelling – something to be avoided.

Thorough checking of work using computer applications combined with detailed proof reading is almost guaranteed to improve grades, so is well worth the effort. With the correct content, concise and precise use of English will make a student’s work polished and ensure they get the best grades.
